The Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – German National Library of Science and Technology, Programme Area C, Research and Development, is offering a position in the research project “SALIENT: Search as Learning – Investigating, Enhancing, and Predicting Learning during Multimodal Web Search”, funded by the Leibniz Association:

Research Associate (E 13 TV-L)

The Research Associate will be a member of the Visual Analytics Research Group (Prof. Dr. Ewerth) in the TIB Research and Development Department. A PhD thesis can be supported. Initial appointment will be for 3 years, starting as soon as possible. The working time is 75 % of the regular weekly working time (part-time, 29,85 weekly hours).

The candidate’s competence area should be squarely rooted in computer science or a related field, they should be able to think creatively, grasp new knowledge quickly, be able to combine abstract reasoning with concrete problem solving skills and be interested in mastering complex challenges.


The objective of the interdisciplinary project is to research learning as it happens during online search processes and to find ways to detect and support them through improved ranking algorithms and recommender systems. The open position will deal with information extraction from multimodal educational resources consulted by users, and the development of novel methods for their ranking and composition. The focus is on the following sub-tasks:

  • Researching and implementing methods for information extraction from multimodal materials of different modalities (text, image, video):
  • Identification of relevant features in multimodal learning resources;
  • Development of novel algorithms for features extraction, ranking and composition of adapted learning materials;
  • Evaluation and validation of the developed methods in close collaboration with project partners from psychology and computer science.
  • Test and documentation of the developed software components, provision of the project results as Open Source
  • Presentation of project results in scientific publications at international venues


  • A Master degree in a relevant field (e. g. Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Science)
  • Good / very good knowledge in at least one of the following areas: computer vision (document analysis, machine learning/deep learning), search as learning and/or multimedia retrieval
  • Excellent proficiency in modern programming languages and modern software engineering methodologies, proven team software development skills.
  • Above-average commitment, solution-oriented approach, initiative and team spirit
  • Independent and structured way of working
  • Excellent communication skills, willingness for interdisciplinary work
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English and German
  • Willingness to travel on business
