Health Care Issues Critical Thinking Essay
AbstractThe importance of active learning has continued to increase in Japan. The authors conducted classes for first-year students who entered the nursing program using the problem-based learning method which is a kind of active learning. Students discussed social topics in classes. The purposes of this study were to analyze the post-class essay, describe logical and critical thinking after attended a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) course. The authors used Mayring’s methodology for qualitative content analysis and text mining. In the description about the skills required to resolve social issues, seven categories were extracted: (recognition of diverse social issues), (attitudes about resolving social issues), (discerning the root cause), (multi-lateral information processing skills), (making a path to resolve issues), (processivity in dealing with issues), and (reflecting). In the description about communication, five categories were extracted: (simple statement), (robust theories), (respecting the opponent), (communication skills), and (attractive presentations). As the result of text mining, the words extracted more than 100 times included “issue,” “society,” “resolve,” “myself,” “ability,” “opinion,” and “information.” Education using PBL could be an effective means of improving skills that students described, and communication in general. The health care system of the USA faces essential challenges that points to the urgent need for reforms. Health care remains the world’s more expensive in America, spending more money per capita on health care than other countries. The costs of health care for business are escalating quickly, quicker than profits from increased productivity and inflation. The public sector faces the same problem of increasing health care expenditures, being the second fastest growing component of a federal budget.
The growing costs create fiscal pressures on the federal governments that limits their ability to satisfy other needs, including decrease of the budget deficits (Wolfe, 2012).
Speaking about a number of reasons to change the health care system, it should be focusing on primary care. Primary care is underutilized, countries that emphasize on primary care have better health at lower costs. The rate of the US primary care is low compared to other developed countries; patients with chronic diseases (diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, etc.) often don’t receive effective treatments that help them effectively manage their conditions. The number of primary care providers differs from the number that is needed to deliver the primary care to all patients. The lack of communication support is declared by low payment of the health care providers and also other tools they need to work together and communicate to improve the patient care (NHC, 2007).
The next major problem of the health care system is an increasing number of uninsured persons. This problem is growing because of enterprises cutting back on private coverage, high level of unemployment; the rate of being uninsured in families with incomes below the poverty line is higher. Reforming the US health care system must involve improving of the quality, decreasing of escalating costs and a huge number of Americans without insurance.
